Dubois, Wyoming -neighbor to Jackson hole & Yellowstone.
When people think of Wyoming everybody thinks of Yellowstone which is America’s first national park. Its beauty and wildlife have been awed at by vacationers and tourists for many years. Another town that comes to mind is Jackson Hole. One of the prettiest spots in North America, Jackson is famous for its skiing in the winter and also for its fishing on the Snake River in the summer. Both places of course must be on your bucket list before it’s too late. What you don’t hear a lot about is a small town right over the mountain called Dubois. Dubois Wyoming is a small ranching and outdoor community that is known for its culture, hospitality and history. The earliest occupants of the Dubois area where known as the sheep eaters which were a group of mountain Shoshone Indians who lived around the area. Many remnants of these people can still be seen and found in the mountains and valleys surrounding Dubois. Items such as petroglyphs, teepee rings, and arrow heads can be found if you know where to look. The Dubois area has seen its fair share of trappers, and outlaws during the early years. Butch Cassidy actually owned and operated a ranch on the outskirts of town for a time. The economy of Dubois really took off due to the Tie hacks between 1914 and 1946. Tie Hacks were Scandinavian loggers who came to the Shoshone National Forest to cut rail road ties. During their time near Dubois they produced over 10 million ties and floated them a hundred miles down the Wind River to Riverton. While fishing on the Wind River keep your eyes open for some of the remains that can still be seen today.
Dubois Wyoming is known as the valley of the warm winds. Nestled in between the Wind River and Absaroka Mountains Dubois always seems to have a warm breeze blowing in the winter months. The mixture of the two mountain ranges coupled with the blood red badlands makes Dubois a truly unique place and a destination point. A variety of wildlife can been seen on a daily basis in and outside of town. The largest heard of Big Horn sheep in Wyoming are found near Dubois and are seen from the truck on many fishing trips. Moose and Mule deer always seem to find themselves close to town while bears and wolves are roaming on the mountain sides. Down town Dubois is always a happening spot. The buck board sidewalks will lead you to many different gift shops and also some of the best eateries in the state. The home town hospitality is an inviting part of Dubois and is what makes people keep coming back to our little but unique town.
Once you have a town like Dubois Wyoming it is very hard to improve on it, but like I said this area is unique and the Dubois area has one more valuable item to offer. Its FISHING!!! Oh yes we might not get the recognition that the North Platte, Snake or Madison get but we also don’t have the crowds of people! Even though we don’t have the crowds the fishing is second to none and we have lots of it. The Wind River is a freestone river that runs right through down town Dubois. Along its way there are a variety of different streams that feed into the Wind River all the way down to the valley. In the river you will find generous populations of brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout, as well as mountain whitefish. Between fast moving pocket water, deep runs and dry fly flats the wind river offers any angler all the possible places for trout to hide. Dredging the bottom with nymphs, chucking big ugly streamers, or waiting for the evening caddis and mayfly hatches to start the Wind River provides the angler with every possible scenario. Not only do we have the Wind River to fish but we also have all the feeder streams such as the East Fork, Wiggins Fork, Horse Creek, Warm Springs Creek, and Brooks Lake Creek. Not to mention an endless amount of clear high mountain lakes. Every watershed near the Dubois Wyoming area has something different to offer but all have large populations of feeding trout. Whether you are a beginner to the sport or a seasoned pro we have the right water for you. We want your fly fishing experience to be the best you can have because you are already in the best place for this sport. You see our trout stay active all winter long especially the larger fish who are always looking for a meal. So the next time you think that you need to pack it in because the snow is starting to fly think again. We can show you the best winter fishing in the North West right here in Dubois Wyoming. Here at the shop we pride ourselves with great customer service not only in the shop but also on the water. Our guides are the best in the business and will take care of you while you’re on the river. We love the teaching end of the sport and that is why Laramie has become a certified casting instructor through the federation of fly fishers. We take an instructional approach to guiding. We want you to catch fish but we also want to see you grow as an angler. So lets see here, great fishing, no crowds of people, a wide variety of streams to fish, helpful guides, and year around access to feeding fish. Don’t think about it any longer.
